Abstract

This paper aims to expose the meaning and origins of the concept of imaginal world ("mundus imaginalis"), the intermediate world between the sensible and the intelligible, created by the french philosopher and orientalist Henry Corbin (1903-1978). Therefore, we will focus the thought of the first philosopher who formulated the concept of imaginal world: Shihâboddîn Yahia Sohravardî (549 / 1155-585 / 1191). Thereafter, we analyze some relevant passages of Sohravardî and Corbin linked to the notion of imaginal. Thus, to the extent that the idea of a "intermediate world" (the "World Soul") already appears in ancient greek philosophy, we will suggest how and for what reasons it was received and interpreted by Sohravardî and other Islamic philosophers.
